Obama and family flip switch to light National Christmas Tree under somber

Reese Witherspoon helped President Barack Obama and the first family (and millions of people watching on the small screen) ring in the season by hosting the National Christmas Tree lighting ceremony on the White House Ellipse on Thursday night. Musicians Crosby, Stills and Nash; Kelsea Ballerini; and Fall Out Boy performed. This year, fifth-grader Anna DeVolld from Alaska had the honors of assisting in the lighting, having written an essay about the significance of the tree. This is the first time the state of Alaska has provided the Capitol Christmas Tree. The event can be seen on public television throughout the month of December. When ABC6 asked the Governor about the controversy surrounding the tree lighting in the past, about whether to call it a “holiday tree” instead of “Christmas Tree”, she said there was never a question.
