Gary Neville has taken his first press conference since being appointed as coach of Valencia.

“(England) have got the two games in March when Valencia don’t play and most of the players are away. He was sacked in 2007 after a string of poor results.

Neville will officially take charge of the Spanish club on Sunday, with staff member Salvador Gonzalez “Voro” given the unenviable task of taking control for this Saturday’s clash with champions Barcelona.

Flores also urged Neville to learn Spanish.

“Every country has a different mentality. He spoke about their enthusiasm and that gives me great enthusiasm to work with the players every day”. “I will pick the best 11 to win games, which is the most important thing independent of style at the moment”.

“I remember what was good and what worked from managers and coaches I played for – what you liked, what you didn’t”.

Keen to meet his new fans, Neville has handed a gift box of oranges from an elderly fan outside of the stadium – and he seemed delighted with the present.

He said: “The only way to approach a football job will be as if it’s a permanent job, I don’t believe you can make short-term decisions, I don’t believe in working that way”.

“My family will move here permanently”.

“It’s the only way I can think”.

“What I’m focused on is what the training sessions will be on Sunday and Monday, and what the team will be for next Wednesday”, said Neville as he gears up for his first full match in charge, a must win match against Lyon in the Champions League.

Neville then confirmed that his family would be joining him in Spain so that he could fully commit to the role.

The former right-back recently completed his Pro Licence course at St George’s Park and will get his first taste of management in the unlikely surroundings of Valencia, where he will work alongside brother Phil, who had been coach at the club under predecessor Nuno Espirito Santo.

“Sitting on the television over the last few years, it is time now to stand up”, he added. Ferdinand believes that Neville’s performance in Spain could be an audition of sorts for the hot seat at Old Trafford.

Having already gained some top level coaching experience with the England squad, he now starts his managerial journey with Valencia, and at just 40 years of age he has plenty of time to become the best at that too.

“I’m very aware of Valencia traditions, I played here against fantastic wingers”.

The former right-back will remain a part of the England set up as assistant coach to Roy Hodgson – a role he has held since 2012. “We don’t do niceties and we talk about actions and what we’re going to do”.
