Coldplay hold back A Head Full of Dreams album from Spotify

While reports are surfacing that Coldplay will headline the Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show, alongside that news is the news that the band will reportedly not be releasing its new album, “A Head Full of Dreams”, on Spotify, at least not immediately.

It sounds like Coldplay will join the ranks of prominent groups that decide not to release a new album on Spotify due to disagreements with its free, ad-supported tier.

Coldplay, the British, Chris Martin-led band that you either love or hate, has been popular since their first album, Parachutes hit the ground running with hits like “Yellow” and “Don’t Panic”. But the rise of premium-only services such as Apple Music, launched in the United Kingdom in June, means the streaming landscape has changed, giving artists and labels more options. That’s also the case on A Head Full of Dreams, which retains the adventurous spirit of 2011’s Mylo Xyloto while possessing a contemporary production sheen, thanks to co-producer Stargate (Rihanna, Katy Perry). It’s a decision that follows similar moves from Taylor Swift and more recently Adele.

“Apple treated me like I was a voice of a creative community that they actually cared about”, she said to Vanity Fair.

However, the record will not be available on Spotify – and you can probably guess why. Those with a free tier such as Spotify – the world’s most popular music streaming company – will have to wait, however.

Others in the music industry have pointed to this factor as well.
