On Friday morning, the suitcase was seen on the ground next to a police SUV on Atlantic Ave.
A man sought by police for leaving a suitcase near a Homeland Security vehicle that had to be detonated by Boston Police’s bomb squad has been arrested in Lawrence, according to a Boston Police spokeswoman.
The suitcase was detonated around noon on Atlantic Avenue, said Myeshia Henderson, a police spokeswoman, in a telephone interview.
“We don’t believe that this was a risky device at this time”, he said.
Vehicle and pedestrian traffic is being divereted from the area.
Police X-rayed the suitcase and determined that there were wires and a power source inside, which further prompted caution by the department, leading to a “controlled detonation”, Evans said.
“What bothers us is the behavior and why this individual placed it next to a Homeland Security vehicle and then hurried away”.
Several streets were closed in the area and armed tactical officers tried keeping people away from the site.
Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said the man was white, in his 40s and wearing a green jacket and blue jeans.

“People are safe. There are no threats to the city”, he added.
