Trudeau Nannies: Conservatives Call Out Canada PM for Taxpayer-Funded Child Care

OTTAWA – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s critics came out swinging on the Nanny-Gate fiasco, saying rich-kid Justin should pay for his own nannies and not saddle taxpayers with the cost of raising his three young children.

It was reported Monday that taxpayers are paying the wages of two nannies who care for the children of Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau.

“I think the right thing to do would be for his family to just pay that himself”, Ambrose said.

The Prime Minister’s Office says both women hired to work in the residence are Canadian citizens.

Marilou Nemiada Trayvilla and Marian Pueyo were hired last month as “special assistants” in the prime minister’s residence, although their roles appear chiefly to be providing child care to the three Trudeau children, who are 19 months, six years and eight years old.

However, Trudeau said he would cancel such payments for wealthy parents such as himself and Harper, and give more to low-income and single parent families under his government’s Canada Child Benefit. “I’m stunned to hear that figure and I am saddened”.

“It does not jive with the very strong pronouncements he made in the election campaign that taxpayers should not be subsidizing wealthy families like his”, she said.

Kate Purchase, Trudeau’s director of communications, says in a statement the family employ two household employees as secondary caregivers who also perform what she calls “other duties around the house”.

Purchase would not specify what those other duties entail, but said similar arrangements have existed for Trudeau’s predecessors.

“The only man in Canada who makes $325,000 a year who is going to get taxpayer dollars for his child care is the prime minister of Canada and I think that’s wrong”, she said.

“I would like all Canadian families to have affordable child care”.

No information was provided, despite multiple requests made to the party.

However, taxpayer money has always paid for the staff that works in the prime minister’s household.

The positions were approved last week by the cabinet, though the nannies will be paid for their work from 4 November – the day Trudeau and his cabinet were sworn in.
