“And Gwyneth and I are really good friends”.

“This is the greatest moment in our band’s life”, Chris beamed. Getting up on stage in a stadium that can accommodate 75,000 fans just days before tickets go on sale for Coldplay’s North American tour is expected to give a hefty boost ticket sales.

The band’s artistic director Phil Harvey also admitted his nerves, and has teased fans with the promise of some special guests.

Speaking to the camera, Martin said: “We’re so excited and honoured and thrilled to be playing the half-time show”. Previous halftime headliners include Bruno Mars, Prince, Beyonce, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, U2 and the Rolling Stones.

Coldplay members are said to be preparing for one of the largest performances of their careers.

The Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show is the most-watched musical event of the year. Very low energy for SB50.

Of course, it’s hard to imagine it’s merely coincidence that the group’s seventh full-length studio effort, “A Head Full of Dreams”, drops Friday. It’s likely they’ll perform a couple of songs from the new album at the show.

The set is interspersed with crowd favourites; “Paradise” from 2011’s Mylo Xyloto runs in to Ghost Stories’ redeemer “Magic” while “Fix You” is followed by “Viva La Vida”. Coldplay and Rihanna were among them.

A Head Full Of Dreams has been produced by Norwegian duo Stargate, consisting Of Tor Erik Hermansen and Mikkel Storleer Eriksen, alongside the band’s long-time collaborator Rik Simpson.

The album track list and collaborators: The 11-track album features collaborations with Beyoncé, Tove Lo and Noel Gallagher.

The first single release, “Adventure of a Lifetime”, has had generous airplay for weeks and ranks in the German Top 20. The album feels like a forced attempt at a big statement, a craven pop move from a band who has, for the first time, failed to read the zeitgeist.
