Zack Greinke agrees to contract with Diamondbacks

Greinke has a 142-93 record and 3.35 ERA for his career. He reached an agreement on a $206.5 million, six-year contract, sources told The Associated Press.

Greinke finished second in the voting for this year’s National League for the Cy Young award, given to the best pitcher in each league, after finishing with a 1.66 earned run average (ERA), the lowest in the majors in two decades.

The sources spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because there hadn’t been an official announcement. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reported the team is still interested in Leake, despite their suddenly revamped rotation.

Greinke’s contract would average $34.4 million per year, surpassing the seven-year, $217 million deal ($31 million average per year) that David Price signed this week with the Boston Red Sox.

One reason why Arizona can afford to play in deeper financial waters is a new television deal that will pay the club at least $1.5 billion over 20 years.

“I think just what him and Clayton have meant to our club over the last three years is just that one-two punch”.

It clearly stunned the Dodgers as well because their president of baseball operations put out a statement on the departure, stating they made a “very strong offer”. “We are now hard at work on our alternatives”. Anderson was 10-9 with a 3.69 ERA, but his innings more than quadrupled from the previous year, which raises questions about his durability for the upcoming season.

The Diamondbacks tried this season to clear salary. If this doesn’t end up being the most stunning upset of the offseason, then we can’t wait to see what is. The team did not say what kind of cancer the former A’s general manager has. “We said that we are going to try to do what we can to promote our young pitchers but also give ourselves a chance to make some savings so that we can have an opportunity to do things at a later date”. Or they must trade for a starter, because that’s how they have won before – pitching in their big ballpark, with runs cobbled together with resourceful, but less-than-overpowering, lineups. He struck out 200 in 222-2/3 innings.

Enter Greinke, who was by some measures the best pitcher in the major leagues in 2015 and is nonetheless one of the game’s true aces. In the Jetstream of those deals came Greinke, and what was believed to be a contest of wills (and dollars) between the Dodgers, the wealthiest franchise in the sport, and the Giants, three-time World Series champion this decade. He didn’t start a game in the National League division series against the New York Mets. The Dodgers also receive a compensation-round pick and will have three picks among the top 50 next June.

Of the available free agent pitchers, Wei-Yin Chen, Yovani Gallardo, Iawkuma, Ian Kennedy and Samardzija would cost a first-round draft pick, while Cueto, Scott Kazmir, Mike Leake and several others will not. And it’s not enough for him to wind up among the Cy Young contenders in the offseason.
