Though I think the Hawkeyes are deserving of their high ranking, Saturday’s Big Ten championship against the No. 5 Michigan State Spartans provides them an opportunity to prove themselves to the rest of the country.
Iowa hasn’t been tested against a team as well-coached and battle-tested as the Spartans this season.
That’s fine with the Hawkeyes. We’ve played in a lot of big games, historically, and this team’s played in big games this year.

Michigan State has arguably the three best wins in college football this season of any contender: OR, at Michigan and at Ohio State. Relying on a strong running attack, Iowa hasn’t needed to go to the air that much in recent weeks. It seems that if Michigan State is going to hand the Hawkeyes their first loss, it will come at the hands of Cook and the Spartan passing attack. Beathard certainly isn’t a flashy player, but he’s smart and makes plays in many ways. He’s also not afraid to take off with the ball and run. Koehn has made 13 of his 17 attempts this season. No, they may not be matched up for the entire game, but when they go toe-to-toe it could be most entertaining.
