Terrorists, Soldier Killed in Encounter in North Kashmir

In the heavy exchange of fire, two terrorists were killed but in the process a soldier also lost his life, said the official adding that the encounter was still on. The spokesman also said that two AK assault rifles and one under-barrel grenade launcher with ammunition and also five radio sets were found on the slain men whose identity is being ascertained.

The encounter began after security forces received a tip off about the presence of terrorists and launched an operation at the Bhawan forest area in Handwara.

General Officer Commanding (GoC) of Srinagar-based army’s 15 Corps Lt Gen Satish Dua recently said about 60 militants are active in North Kashmir comprising three districts Kupwara, Baramulla and Bandipora.

Police sources said that security forces’ reinforcements have arrived in the area to join the final assault against the remaining holed up militants.

On Thursday, three guerrillas were killed in Poonch district of Jammu region when alert army men foiled an infiltration bid from across the Line of Control (LoC) into the Indian side from Pakistan-administered part of the state.
