“I thought we were magnificent defensively, our goalkeeper [Artur Boruc] played a big part in that”. It is just about trying to get the better of the individual battles.

Howe admitted: “I did not expect to be so close to them but I think they are in a false position and I think they will climb the league”.

Bournemouth made a slow but encouraging start to life in the Premier League, picking up four points in their opening four games, but their 2-0 victory over Sunderland back in September was their last win, notching just three points in the eight fixtures since. “I’m proud of them tonight”. Whoever is called upon steps up to the plate.

Bournemouth have been struggling with injuries so far this season, with 10 of their squad unavailable for the Chelsea clash. “Now it’s about adding wins to those performances”.

Howe said: “You hope a result like that can really boost the confidence and the belief of the players – it certainly helps to build momentum”.

Last season’s Championship title winners travel to face the Premier League champions at Stamford Bridge in Saturday’s 5.30pm kickoff.

Despite being the relegation zone, their spirit has always looked sky high and Eddie Howe will ensure that his side definitely not go down without a fight.

“We are playing them at a good time for our perspective”.

“If we are in a good place and we perform then we can compete”. “We’re on a massive high after this game, the thing we have to do now is focus on the next game and try to put a performance in”.

Howe will be without Harry Arter (hamstring) this weekend but is optimistic the midfielder will not be out for as long as first feared.
