UK opposition Labour Party wins by-election
The scale of the victory defied Ukip candidate John Bickley’s promise of a by-election shock and his earlier claims that Mr Corbyn was “toxic” on the doorstep.

The Oldham West and Royston constituency had been held by respected Labour MP Michael Meacher from 1970 until his death in October 2015.
Jeremy Corbyn has said the size of Labour’s majority in the Oldham by-election shows how “broad” support for his party is across the whole country.
The Ukip leader claimed to have “evidence from an impeccable source that today’s postal voting was bent”.
UKIP questioned the legitimacy of the postal votes following their defeat, with party leader Nigel Farage describing the result as “perverse” on Twitter. McMahon won a more commanding victory than his predecessor Michael Meacher, who gained the seat with 54.8 percent of the vote in the general election in May.
Tom Watson, Labour’s deputy leader, said lawmakers opposed to Corbyn should learn from the result and that some had “gone too far” in their criticism.
“I’m commenting on the state of modern Britain, post mass immigration”.
And Oldham Council said there had been a “high level of daily scrutiny” of the by-election, the first to be run under the new system of individual electoral registration – where people have to sign up to vote themselves rather than being registered as a member of a household.
There were 7,406 postal votes returned in the by-election – 10.7pc of the electorate.
Mr McMahon said it was “truly overwhelming” to represent his town in Westminster as a “local lad”.
Oldham Council’s acting returning officer Carolyn Wilkins confirmed on Friday that no formal complaints had been received about alleged postal voting irregularities. The Conservatives’ vote share was down by nearly 10 per cent compared to May. He also said the result was “staggering” for Labour.
“I have spoken to our organisers and they have got no knowledge of that”. If it was a referendum on Jeremy Corbyn, he has won.
Labour’s share of the vote increased by more than seven points to 62.1% and there was a 2.27% swing from Ukip to Labour.
“I hope our MPs look at this result”.
“His name came up in not a very good way when I was knocking on doors, so I think it was right that he stayed away from it”, Mr Danczuk told Sky News.

“We take our duties in administering the voting and count process very seriously and if we receive any allegations of postal voting irregularities then we would be immediately reported these to the police so they can be fully investigated”.
