Fiji lift Dubai Rugby Sevens crown

Ireland’s third and final pool fixture saw them face a Fiji side that clinically punished handling errors with their pace and offloading ability.

Tim Walsh’s side lead the fledgling HSBC Women’s World Series after going undefeated throughout the entire two-day event at The Sevens Stadium.

Australia had been handed the toughest of tasks in the Cup Quarter-Finals when they were paired with current World Series champions New Zealand. “We’re looking forward to backing the team throughout the tournament, and more importantly we’re proud to be helping the Foundation in its work to raise awareness of MND”.

It was a good effort to win the final despite not having Chloe Dalton and influential captain Sharni Williams available, but Australia started the Series strongly, and we know that other teams have more room to improve.

Fiji scored five tries in the first half and four in the second in its romp over Canada, which got tries from Pat Kay and Conor Trainor.

“We scored 16 tries today and every single one was converted, which is awesome”, said Ryan.

The US had clinched the 2014/2015 season-ending London Sevens title in May, beating South Africa, England and Australia in the process.

The successful conversion by Madison Hughes sent the United States into the semi-finals and the South Africans into the Plate semi-final against Argentina.

Canada finished 13th at the Dubai stop on the HSBC Sevens World Series on Saturday, hanging on to edge Japan 19-17 and win the consolation Shield portion of the men’s rugby sevens competition.

“We haven’t fully revealed our hand as yet”.

“South Africa are a formidable team, hugely physical, but I think we have the power to cope with them, and we certainly have the pace to cope with Senatla”, Friday said.

Coach Ben Ryan said winning the series again was less of a priority than winning the Olympic gold medal in Rio de Janeiro in nine months, but taking the Dubai title meant they will try to keep the roll on.

“I was absolutely chuffed the way they performed got better and better and the way they handled some tribulations”, he said.

England and Australia reached their pool-deciding final match of the day unbeaten after wins over Wales and Kenya, and England, a four-time victor in Dubai, was always in control in a 21-5 win.
