Davidson won’t retire Steph Curry’s jersey until he graduates from school

“… I made a promise to coach [Bob] McKillop and my family that when I left school back in ’09 that that would be accomplished – and it will be soon”. Well yeah, in a vacuum it is, but one honor is still evading Curry at the moment and that is having his Davidson No. 30 jersey retired.

Curry left in 2009 during his junior year after helping the Wildcats basketball team reach the Elite Eight a year earlier.

In case you haven’t been watching the Warriors for whatever reason, ESPN has helpfully compiled a clip of Curry’s first 100 threes of the season (I guess that a clip called “Stephen Curry’s First 102 Threes of the 2015-16 Season” doesn’t have the same ring to it). According to his Davidson bio, Curry was majoring in sociology.

That season Curry set the NCAA single-season record with 162 three-pointers, was a finalist for the Wooden Award and named to the All-America Second Team by the Associated Press, Sports Illustrated, ESPN and Sporting News. However, Curry’s alma mater Davidson College isn’t giving any preferential treatment to the reigning MVP.

Curry also acknowledged that he is going to keep his focus on his career in the National Basketball Association for now, but said it will be “huge” to finish that part of his life when he does get the chance.

That said, the school won’t make an exception.

Athletic director Jim Murphy said he’s not even sure how the school would go about bending the rules for Curry if they wanted to. “I assume it would be the board of trustees”.

Davidson University holds a strict policy on retiring the numbers of former athletes.

Murphy said a similar debate has happened in the past at Davidson surrounding a Hall of Fame candidacy. “It’d be an interesting discussion, but it hasn’t been started yet”.
