General Motors India voluntarily recalls 155000 units of Chevrolet Spark, Beat

Ltd on Monday said that it will recall as many as 155,000 units of two small cars and a utility vehicle because of safety concerns.

With this latest recall, GMI has pipped Maruti Suzuki India to become second in the list of OEMs with maximum vehicles recalled in India.

GM said the accessory met all relevant regulatory standards.

The recall, the company’s biggest in the country, will cover the Chevrolet Spark and Beat hatchbacks and the Chevrolet Enjoy minivan. GM is recalling the vehicles as the faulty battery wiring can create a short circuit with the possible risk of fire.

“Quality is our highest priority and we are committed to putting customers at the center of everything we do”, said Arvind Saxena, President and Managing Director, General Motors India.

The company is notifying customers individually about the recall and how and when to bring their vehicles for inspection and correction.

The replacement/repairing of the faulty part will be done free of cost at the company’s centres, and the customers will directly be contacted by GM.

General Motors is the world’s third major auto manufacturing firm that is recalling its three minor cars equipped with a remote keyless entrance accessory that lets consumer to open their cars without a typical, mechanical key.

The Society of Indian Automotive Manufacturers have set up a code of conduct which has certain rules which a manufacture has to follow during such instances of mass recall.

In May, Honda recalled three models – Accord, CR-V and Civic – while Nissan Motor India recalled Sunny and Micra previous year.

“As a result, the impacted Chevrolet Spark, Beat and Enjoy vehicles could experience damage to the vehicle due to inappropriate routing”. Back in June 2013, the company called back 114,000 units of Tavera in order to fix emission problems, however there were accusations that the officials at GM planned with authoritiesto fake statutory emission tests.
