Roselle Park Councilwoman Submits Resignation Over ‘Christmas’ Tree Lighting

The leading causes of Christmas tree fires are: electrical distribution or lighting equipment; decorative lights too close to the trees; wiring or related equipment; cords or plugs and finally, candles near trees. “This year, Tammie and her mother started talking about the possibility of donating the tree to Metro”. Storey then submitted her letter of resignation the very next morning.

A councilwoman in the New Jersey borough of Roselle Park has resigned over the council’s decision to change the name of a local event from “A Tree Lighting” to “A Christmas Tree Lighting”.

NJ.com (http://bit.ly/1ILdHHf ) reports that Charlene Storey announced her decision just minutes after the Roselle Park council approved the change Thursday night. She after rescinded her resignation, which was imagined to take impact on January 7, the newspaper reported.

According to the NJ.com, fourth-ward Councilman M. Gino Elmarassy also voted against the name change, but Story’s statement notes that the remaining four council members are “male, white, Catholic and members of the Knights of Columbus, a religious organization that every year posts a large sign urging, “Keep Christ in Christmas”. “Changing the name – and I emphasize “changing” – clearly disrespects them all and hijacks the tree lighting for one religion”, she wrote.

Storey says she regrets having to resign. Both said they felt that with tragedies taking headlines, like the events in Paris and the recent shootings in California, it is good to see so many people gathered to celebrate life and love.
