130 flood warnings as month’s worth of rain over 24 hours

Hundreds of homes across the county have been affected by flooding. Rescue and recovery operations are ongoing.

Fire crews helped a man trapped in a silver BMW in Chipping Road, east of Chipping, after the vehicle was submerged in three feet of water at 1pm on Saturday.

“Those calls continued sporadically right through the night”.

6X6 TCV’s and soldiers were also deployed to Kenmare, Tralee and Bantry and will be co-located with HSE medical teams to assist them to get to medical emergencies in flooded areas if required. We also have generators en route to Morecambe Fire Station to aid the emergency response.

Their last deployment to Cumbria was during the major flooding in 2009.

The A499 at Pwllheli is blocked due to flood water between the A497 and Llanbedrog, which is affecting traffic towards Abersoch.

It comes after heavy snow and rain caused severe disruption and flooding to areas in the south of Scotland on Thursday.

The emergency service itself did not escape flood damage.

Residents in Carlisle have been warned of imminent flash floods.

The weather conditions led to Glasgow’s George Square festive attractions, including the city centre ice rink, closing for the day.

But the rain will return on Sunday night with heavy outbreaks expected. A 15-mile stretch of the road was closed and several areas of flooding between Invergloy and Letter Finlay caused further chaos.

Many homes and roads remain flooded in Scotland and many parts of Ireland are also underwater with dozens of rivers around the British Isles at their highest recorded levels.

He added: “This is absolutely devastating for the town of Keswick”. This has been most acute in the Borders, Dumfries and Galloway and Tayside, where some residents were evacuated and we know there has been some damage to property and infrastructure.

The UK’s Met Office has issued a yellow severe weather warning, for Monday, 6 December. These are the highest warnings that can be issued and indicate that extreme weather is expected.

The warnings are valid from 2am on Saturday until 6am on Sunday.

The village of Shap in Cumbria had the most, with 7in (178.2mm) of rain falling in the 24 hours until 7pm on Saturday night, while over 6in (156.4mm) fell in Keswick over the same period.
