Fury later said he was misquoted, saying: “It is all misquotes”.

Last month, in the run-up to the title fight in which he defeated ten-year champion Wladimir Klitschko, he gave an interview in which he said that “three things need to happen before the devil comes home”.

The 39-year-old boxer added, “I couldn’t show my full potential at any time. The head guards came off. I think it was about six rounds”, Joshua said.

Fury added: “They can say what they like about me. He could have stopped Wlad”.

The BBC said in a statement: “Tyson Fury’s victory and subsequent crowning as world heavyweight champion was widely covered by media outlets and his inclusion on the shortlist is similarly recognition of his sporting achievement – it is not about endorsing his personal views”.

The 6ft 9in hard man, nicknamed “The Gypsy King” is a big kid, according to his wife, who said he puts the Disney Channel on all day long and knows the words to every song. Men do not look acceptable in dresses.

The BBC has come under renewed pressure to remove the heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury from its Sports Personality of the Year shortlist after the newly-crowned world champion appeared unrepentant about a string of sexist comments, some directed at the Olympic and world champion heptathlete, Jessica Ennis-Hill.

Among a number of other events to cause a stir, Fury’s nomination for the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year has caused outrage among fans, who are calling for the Briton to be removed from the shortlist.

“People should look up to me, young kids”. You can have people from the most hard backgrounds – and yes, travellers do get it in the neck, here and in Ireland, from the outside world – who achieve greatness by the traditional means available to the working class and the poor, viz, boxing, or you can have Polly bloody Toynbee. “I have homosexual friends and I do not judge them due to their sexuality”.

“I am aware of my position as the heavyweight champion of the world and the responsibility that this brings”. Or was it about the cooking and cleaning? Apart from anything else there are millions of gay and lesbian couples the whole world over who would never touch a child except to prevent harm to them. “That’s right, I stand up for beliefs”.

Asked whether he thought it was appropriate for Fury to make threats of physical violence towards a journalist, Hennessy replied: “Get a grip. Making me a good cup of tea, that’s what I believe”, Sport24 reported. That’s my beliefs, just like I believe in Lord Jesus Christ as my lord and saviour and if anyone wants to dispute that let them do it. On the other, they really hate it when he then goes on to express views entirely consistent with that background.

Fury then went on to launch a homophobic tirade in the interview, comparing homosexuality with paedophilia.
