Austria’s Puchner fastest in 2nd training run at Lake Louise
With her 70th World Cup win, Lindsey Vonn now is only 16 behind the all-time record set by Ingemar Stenmark in 1989 (Frank Gunn/The Canadian Press via AP).

Sunday’s race in Lake Louise was notable for another Vail Valley athlete, too.
Lindsey Vonn produced a masterclass in the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup super-G at Lake Louise as she won her third race of the meet in Canada by over one second.
She finished in 1 minute, 50.5 seconds, edging Cornelia Huetter of Austria by 0.58 seconds. “I feel like there were some people that doubted whether I could win today and especially because Lara (Gut) had won the last couple races here in super-G”.
In addition to her near spill Friday, the 2010 Olympic downhill champion skied into a headwind blast so strong that it bent a flag to the ground.
“I’m really lucky I get to race World Cups already”, said Grenier, 19. Jonathan Hayward AP Vonn has had three career hat-tricks and increased her record for most career wins at a single resort to 14 in 2013. “Lake Louise has proven again it’s my favourite place on the tour and I’m leaving here with a lot of confidence”. She swept all three races in 2011 and 2012.
Larissa Yurkiw, of Owen Sound, Ont. was the top Canadian in 14th.
Vonn’s 20-year-old American teammate Mikaela Shiffrin, a slalom specialist and overall World Cup leader, will make her super-G debut. With 68 career World Cup victories, Vonn is the winningest woman of all time.
“It’s just astounding to me how good of an understanding she has of the terrain, above everybody else and knowing exactly when to let her skis go”, Shiffrin said. But down the pitch, onto the flats, I felt like I carried some good speed.
Among her admirers was nine-year-old Calgarian Sierra Coe, who asked Vonn how many more media interviews her heroine had to do. “I’m sure once she gets the hang of it, she’s going to be unsafe”.
“I still want to push as hard as I possibly can. We’ll just hopefully both be kicking ass”. Shiffrin’s brother, Taylor, was a forerunner in the men’s giant slalom Sunday at Beaver Creek.
“I think I could still be better, but I’m still happy with where I am”.

“I’m starting ahead of where I actually thought I would”. “I felt solid on the skis and it was really fun to be honest”.
