Airstrikes hit several positions of the Islamic State group in its de facto capital of Raqqa in northern Syria on Sunday, killing and wounding at least 15 people, according to opposition activists and social media pages loyal to IS. Britain began its bombing campaign within hours of the vote, hitting an oilfield held by Isis.

More than 30 militants from the Islamic State group have been killed in apparent U.S.-led coalition raids on Syria.

Its operations have expanded further in recent days, partly in response to the deadly attacks in Paris claimed by the terrorist group. Lately Russia and Britain have joined in the air campaign.

The coalition said it struck Raqqa and other parts of northern and eastern Syria on Sunday. The observatory said the US-led coalition was responsible, while other activists said Russian jets bombed the city.

Also Sunday, a Syrian businessman that the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned last month, saying he serves as a middleman for oil purchases by the Syrian regime from Islamic State, denied the charges against him.

IS rules the territory under its control with an iron fist, brutally punishing those who challenge its authority or violate its harsh interpretation of Islam.
