Torontonians will be paying homage with a vigil that will be held at Philosopher’s Walk at the University of Toronto’s St. George campus and that event is expected to get underway at 6 p.m. According to event organizers this year’s event will also be honouring missing and murdered indigenous women.
Russell says despite the setbacks, 2015 has been a strong year for women standing up and fighting back, particularly in well publicized cases like that of Bill Cosby and Jian Ghomeshi.
Twenty-six years ago today, a man walked into the École Polytechnique in Montreal and opened fire, killing 14 female engineering students.
At a ceremony held earlier in the day in Montreal, white roses were laid on pillars in a park near the school to remember the victims.
December 6 is a chance to mourn the Montreal Massacre, but also a call to action.
“Today is an opportunity to remember and honour these women and also an opportunity to reflect and speak out against violence against women in all forms”, said Runchey, a women in gender studies student.
The Women’s Centre of Hamilton will be hosting “a moment of silence and reflection” this weekend outside of city hall.
