“She is a very good councilwoman who is very good at what she does for the borough”, Hokanson said. The ceremony will be called a Christmas tree lighting on December 11th, and this point forward, but Councilwoman Storey says this needs to be a topic of conversation, a discussion she will have with the committee moving forward.
Thursday’s vote overturned a 1990s vote in which the city changed the event’s name from Annual Christmas Tree Lighting to Annual Holiday Tree Lighting. She stated that had there been a more distinct set of council members, the decision to include “Christmas” in the name of the annual tree lighting event would have never been brought up in the first place.
‘Yes, Christmas is a cultural holiday as well as a religious one.
Storey said she was raised Catholic but describes herself as a non-believer.
Friday’s event will continue to be called a “Christmas tree lighting”.
“I felt sandbagged. It was not on the agenda and when the mayor and I spoke about it a couple of days before, it was mentioned in passing, among other matters, and the impression was that this was going to be done next year”.
Based on reports, Mayor Carl Hokanson reached out to Storey.
Asked about future plans, Storey told the Roselle Park News she hopes to find new wasy to serve the community. He said everyone is entitled to their own beliefs, but also noted that each town can use whatever title it wants to use for the ceremony.

Washington DC got a little brighter Thursday night with the national Christmas tree lighting ceremony. This year’s Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is a Norway Spruce from Gardiner, New York, and is 80-years old, 78-feet tall, and weighs 10-tons. ‘It’s not a holiday tree, it’s not a pear tree – it’s a Christmas tree, and this is the season’.
