Jimmy Carter says cancer is ‘gone’

Former President Jimmy Carter said Sunday that he is now cancer-free, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Carter, 91, broke the good news during the Sunday School class he teaches at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Ga.

Carter said the latest MRI scan taken by his doctor detected no cancer. ‘The church, everybody here, just erupted in applause’.

Stephanie Wynn, a 12-year member of the congregation, confirmed Carter’s comments to CNN. Nine days later, Carter said that surgery revealed cancer.

Carter’s statement said he will continue to receive regular doses of Keytruda, a recently approved auto-immune drug to help his body seek out any cancer cells appearing in his body.

“For today, the news can not be better”, Lichtenfeld said.

During a press conference in August, Carter announced that his melanoma had spread to his liver and brain.

“Now it’s in the hands of God”, he said.

In November, Carter’s doctors at Emory University’s Winship Cancer Institute in Atlanta said his treatment had gone well – with no signs the cancer has spread.
