Mark Richt won’t coach Georgia bowl game after accepting Miami job

This news coming just two days after Richt announced that he would be stepping down from his position at Georgia following the Bulldogs (9-3) upcoming bowl game.

“I do understand what’s expected”, Richt said.

Another candidate to serve as the interim head coach was defensive line coach Tracy Rocker. Miami is a pro market that demands excellence, but how hard can it be after what he went through at Georgia? He is a former Georgia receiver who has been on Richt’s staff since 2007, one year after his career as a Georgia receiver ended.

Any coach who spends 15 years at a major program like Georgia in a tough conference like the SEC must be doing something right. There has not been one negative thing to say about Coach Richt and I, for one, am very excited to get to meet him.

With 145 wins, Richt is proven and that makes him an anomaly for an incoming Miami coach.

Sources told ESPN that in the Monday news conference, Richt stated he wanted to coach again.

“He’s outgoing, he’s got a good personality, I think he’ll do a good job in all of the other areas that you’re talking about”, Saban said.

Alabama running back Derrick Henry, Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey and Iowa cornerback Desmond King are the five finalists for the Walter Camp player of the year award.

Alabama can all but assure its spot in college football’s four-team playoff with a win Saturday over Florida in the SEC championship game. He is a South Florida native and played for Howard Schnellenberger at Miami, graduating in 1982.

The Richt hiring was first reported by CanesInsight.com. Miami remains on NCAA probation, and will likely have to limit itself to 81 or 82 scholarships next season instead of the maximum allotment of 85. Miami had reached out not long after it fired Al Golden in October to gauge Richt’s interest in possibly returning to his alma mater. It is unknown if Scott will remain on the staff. “I miss that part of it”, he said.

Richt is considered a strong hire for a Hurricanes program that has largely floundered for more than a decade.

FSU won at least 10 games and finished in the top 5 of the final poll in each of Richt’s 11 seasons as a full-time assistant.
