Van Gaal backs misfiring Manchester United to click against Wolfsburg

“[In] the Champions League, you could be out and that is bad for everybody, for the club, for the players and for the manager”. “But the question, “Shall Suarez score here, shall Aguero score here” is also a question mark”. That’s a normal issue but you can’t score every chance and when you see how many players get chances in our team, it’s not a fixed person.

Anthony Martial, Marouane Fellaini, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Jesse Lingard missed good opportunities to earn a much-needed win for Louis van Gaal’s side, who dropped to fourth in the Premier League.

The 64-year-old’s contract is due to run out in the summer of 2017 and United are open to extending it. They are keen to clarify Van Gaal’s position over the next few months and have a plan in place by the end of the season. They have quality but they want to score goals. Michael Owen stated the obvious yesterday in saying that you can’t win games without scoring.

“Players are not scared in front of goal, no”, he said.

“Attack! Attack!” were heard throughout the match as Manchester United struggled to break down a well drilled West Ham backline.

“It’s very important for us and I know how hard it is at Wolfsburg”. The player I know from Bayern Munich.

Louis van Gaal is still building the team – though he should have gotten the formula with the transfers right this season at least – the team just need an extra dose of attacking power and that could well be the finished article for the team. We have not many years together any more.

Of his side’s performance, Bilic said: “United had their chances but we defended great as a team”.

United may have the best defensive record in the top flight, but a return of 20 goals in 15 matches at the other end is hardly title-winning form. Today, we were dominant and attacking, we were creating chances – only we forgot to score.

United will perhaps have to double their current level of player investment to £500m to deliver the kind of big names who will pacify supporters.

Holding midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin limped off in the first half in another injury concern for United ahead of what could be a must-win game at Wolfsburg on Tuesday to advance in the Champions League. “I will give it [football] up [in 2017]”, he said. I hope we can improve.

Ordinarily, United would have Guardiola prominently in their thoughts bearing in mind his success at Bayern and previously at Barcelona, where his team twice beat Sir Alex Ferguson’s sides in Champions League finals.
