Samsung wants to measure your body fat with your phone

South Korea’s tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. has won a patent for analyzing body fat through smartphones, an intellectual property organization said Tuesday, which may mark another leap forward in enhancing health care-related features on smart devices. The sensors can then measure “input current and the intensity of the measured voltage” to figure out your fat levels.

As detailed in Samsung’s patent, clocking your body fat would be made rather simple and efficient with the use of their pending technology.

One drawing, for instance, shows a person gripping the phone with both hands, and moving his arms up and down. Just squeeze your phone for a quick body fat reading. All users would have to do is grab their phone, including four sensors either built into the phone or a case.

The company did not provide details on when the new technology will be applied to its products.

Of course, this is only a patent, so there’s no knowing if it’ll ever make its way into Samsung’s phones, but it is interesting to see that Samsung is focused on developing new health and fitness tech. But for those who are already in great shape, the heart rate monitors found in your smartphone will probably be “disappointing”.
