The first half of Season 5 of Once Upon a Time comes to a close with a mid-season finale that delivers several twists, though none that are particularly good for our characters.
Once Upon a Time season 5, episode 11, “Swan Song”, is paying dues to the dead. Killian/Hook ultimately decided he wanted to be a hero.
In the show’s winter finale Swansong, Captain Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) and his dark minions plotted to take everyone to the underworld so they could rule Storybrooke. He chose love and family over revenge, and sacrificed himself. Dark One Emma teams up with the heroes in a last-ditch effort to save the people she loves from the Dark Ones who are determined to get a foot-hold in this world.
In one scene, Emma told Hook that she will do her best to stop him even if it means that she will have to kill him, which is ironic since she also did everything in her power to keep him alive and that led Hook to becoming a Dark One.
After sucking all of the darkness into Excalibur, he forced Emma to stab him so she could save herself – and all of Storybrooke’s residents – in one of the most heartbreaking moments in OUAT history. It is possible that a lot of characters for the second half of the season as a preview showed that Peter Pan and Regina will encounter her mother. “He’s sticking around, but in a completely different way and quite shocking”. The weird thing about finding out that Gold is the Dark One again is that she’s furious at him, but at the same time, she now has a way to Hook. She does so by forcing him to face the demons from his past.
Ever-resourceful, Emma saw the betrayal as an opportunity, convincing Rumple to pay her back by providing her access to the boat to the Underworld.
Once Upon a Time returns Sunday, March 6 at 8 p.m. on ABC.
