Two months after former coach Steve Spurrier’s abrupt resignation and a prolonged coaching search that continued to twist, twirl, flip, and finally land, former Florida Gators coach and current Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp – known as Coach Boom by many of his fans – agreed in principle to be the new coach of SC. It is official! Introducing our new Head Coach, Will Muschamp!
Muschamp, the former Auburn defensive coordinator and Florida Gators head coach, was introduced by Athletics Director Ray Tanner and University President Harris Pastides. They’ll have one in the fiery Muschamp, nicknamed “Coach Boom”. Now it’s Muschamp’s turn to see what he can do.
“Connor Shaw was as good a competitor at quarterback that I’ve coached against”, Muschamp said.
“There’s no doubt in my mind with his knowledge, expertise, and experience, he is well-suited to be the coach at the University of South Carolina”, Tanner said.
“We did a lot of things very well”, Muschamp said.
Allen also was impressed by Muschamp’s playing career, he said.
Spurrier believed South Carolina’s players needed a change from his style. He is the second straight Florida coach to hold South Carolina’s permanent job, following Spurrier, who left in mid-October after 10-plus seasons in Columbia.
Despite the defense’s strength – ranked 15th in 2014, 8th in 2013, and 5th in 2012 – Muschamp’s woeful offense was his death-knell at Gainesville in 2014 after compiling a 7-5 record. “You’ll know as quick as I know”. If you don’t get it right at that positions, it affects the entire organization.
Muschamp also answered questions about his sideline demeanor, which has been well-documented over the years as passionate, but hot-headed.
“I’m certainly in accordance with everything [Ray Tanner] wants done”, Muschamp said.
