National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued notice to the Central Government and Germany’s auto-giant Volkswagen (VW), in a plea seeking ban on sale of the vehicle produced by VW which has been accused of violating emission norms.

The EPA said the affected VW vehicles emit 40 times the amount of nitrogen oxide pollutants than allowed.

Announcing “a voluntary recall for updating all cars with EA189 engines in the Indian market”, the company said the recall will cover cars sold from 2008 till end of November 2015 in India.

The automaker sold 5,462 TDI diesel vehicles in November 2014, the company’s spokeswoman told AFP. A communication program is being devised to reach out to the owners of cars with EA 189 engines through the group’s respective brands.

This move is mandatory not only for the brand’s models, but also for Audi and Skoda cars.

The company told USA regulators that it intentionally installed software programmed to switch engines to a cleaner mode during official emissions testing.

“Actually, we have never said that “defeat device” was found. ARAI road test found major variation in the emission level which we believed was an “indication” that they might have used defeat device”, said Ambuj Sharma, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries.

Terming emission test cheating by Volkswagen as “well thought-out crime”, government today said all diesel passenger vehicles in India will come under scanner in the next six months to check their compliance with norms.

DETROIT (AP) – Volkswagen’s emissions-cheating scandal took a serious bite out of the company’s US sales last month.

The smaller cars will also require software updates, but VW expects both technical remedies to take under an hour, with a recall likely to run through next year in Europe.

Volkswagen will present the technical released solution to Ministry of Heavy Industries and ARAI.

According to the company, the 2.0-litre diesel engine will only need a software upgrade, while the 1.6-litre EA 189 diesel engine will be subject to a hardware and software fix. “All technical measures will be implemented as soon as they are available”.
