Israel arrests alleged Jewish extremists over deadly arson

In the latest episode of violence on Thursday, a Palestinian assailant was shot dead by police officers near Jerusalem’s walled Old City after he stabbed another officer who was sitting in his auto, Rosenfeld said.

“The forces responded, shooting the attacker and resulting in his death”.

Since the violence erupted, 19 Israelis have been killed in Palestinian attacks, mostly stabbings and shootings.

Later Friday afternoon, an Israeli girl was lightly wounded when the vehicle she was traveling in was pelted by rocks thrown by Palestinian near Neve Tsuf, a settlement north of Ramallah in the West Bank.

Palestinian security sources said one of the dead men – a gunman who the army said fired at soldiers near the West Bank village of Hizmeh – was a member of the Palestinian Authority’s security forces, identifying him as 37-year-old Mazen Hassan Orebeih.

The Shin Bet domestic security agency said arrests had been made in recent days of young men “suspected of belonging to a Jewish terror organisation and carrying out terror attacks”.

Details on the arson case have been kept under wraps by Israel, drawing Palestinian allegations of foot-dragging, while lawyers for the suspects said their clients were pressured by interrogators to confess. They did not say what rank he held in the PA’s security forces.

An unnamed senior military Israeli official was quoted in several Israeli newspapers as saying that the army is concerned about the possible disintegration of the Palestinian Authority and an end to security cooperation with Israel.

According to the Israeli military, the two were searched on a military roadblock, and after they were released, “they came back and stabbed a soldier in his face, before the army shot them dead”.
