Meet Kendrick Lamar | The Grammy nominee leading the pack

American rapper Kendrick Lamar is leading the Grammy Awards 2016 nominations with 11 nods.

Stapleton also sang his way into three of the Grammy Awards’ four country-specific categories, including Best Country Album (for Traveller), Best Country Solo Performance (“Traveller”) and Best Country Song (“Traveller”). Interestingly, legendary European producer Max Martin had his hand in creating both of the latter artists’ nominees, while Lamar’s was largely produced by longtime collaborator Terrace Martin.

The 2016 Grammy Awards will take place on February 15 2016 at Los Angeles’ Staples Centre.

A battle between upbeat, finely crafted pop and politically minded hip-hop seems to be what’s shaping up for the biggest prizes at this year’s Grammy Awards. Her other nominations are for pop solo performance, pop duo or group performance, pop vocal album and music video. So texted Macklemore to Kendrick Lamar when the former beat out the latter for the Best Rap Album award at the Grammys in 2014.

Song nominees run from Lamar’s “Alright”, which touches on police brutality, to Swift’s tongue-in-cheek celebration of romantic fickleness, “Blank Space”. And local singer and keyboardist PJ Morton, son of gospel vocalist and preacher Bishop Paul S. Morton of Greater St. Stephen Church, is nominated as a member of Maroon 5 in the best pop duo/group performance category for the song sugar.

Tori Kelly, on the other hand, made the cut for a slot in the Best New Artist category. He’s nominated twice for both best rap song with “Alright” and for co-writing Kanye West’s “All Day“, as well as best music video for “Alright” and “Bad Blood”. He also observed that the cast album for the Broadway hit “Hamilton”, which uses a variety of musical genres in its score, didn’t get an album of the year nomination.

Taylor Swift’s wildest dreams have come true. And while we congratulate old favorites Death Cab For Cutie on Kintsugi ” s nomination, it’s hilarious to see Ben Gibbard’s band competing against the likes of Muse and Slipknot in the Best Rock Album category. But it also included R&B artist D’Angelo and The Vanguard. Alabama Shakes, Björk, My Morning Jacket, Tame Impala, and Wilco make up the billing for Best Alternative Album.

Lamar, who headlined the closing night of the 2015 Essence Festival in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, scored 11 nods. Little Big Town crushed it again with 4 Grammy nods.
