Browns’ Josh McCown done for season with broken collarbone

Davis wasn’t bad for the Browns in the 33-27 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, completing 7-of-10 passes with a 42-yard touchdown after coming in for McCown.

Coach Mike Pettine would not discuss whether Austin Davis or Johnny Manziel will start Sunday against Cincinnati. So Davis replaced McCown after he left the game with 8:29 left in the fourth quarter with a season-ending fractured collarbone suffered when the veteran absorbed a shot from defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan with 2:20 left in the third quarter.

While Pettine said Pryor’s transition to wide receiver will continue, the coach is far more willing to entertain Pryor as a No. 3 quarterback than he was in training camp. “He was prepared, played well and put us in position to win”, Pettine said.

Browns cornerback Justin Gilbert sustained a concussion while returning a kickoff in the third quarter of his first start this season.

Davis played in 10 games, starting eight, for the St. Louis Rams a year ago.

The quarterback-turned-wide receiver has agreed to sign with Cleveland, a person familiar with the decision told the Associated Press on Tuesday.

Pettine said that Manziel is not done for the season and could see the field at some point this year. I don’t want to declare, ‘Hey, this is what it’s going to be from here on out.’ These are two young quarterbacks that have upside, and we want to see what that upside is.

And while Manziel may (or may not) still be Cleveland’s quarterback of the future, Davis is the quarterback of the moment.

Of course, they’d then have to decide if this all means that Manziel is done for good in Cleveland, leading them to draft a QB, or if they are going to give him another chance next season to prove he can adjust to the National Football League lifestyle.

The Browns are last in the division at 2-9 and have now lost 14 of their last 16 games stretching back to last season.

“I just wanted to drive in low and stick my hand up”, he said.

“It was not displaced, so he does not need to have surgery but it will take more than the rest of the season to get it healed up”, Pettine said. During that span, Lewis has had just four starting quarterbacks, including Jon Kitna, Carson Palmer, Ryan Fitzpatrick (filling in for an injured Palmer), and Andy Dalton.
