Sam Hunt, Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, more react to Grammy nominations
The Best Regional Roots Record category, which often honors Louisiana artists, featured nominations for New Orleans pianist Jon CLeary (Go Go Juice) and Lafayette cajun/zydeco/swamp pop outfit The Revelers (Get Ready). For example, Rihanna‘s single “FourFiveSeconds”, featuring Paul McCartney and Kanye West, would have seemed tailor-made for Grammy judges who generally love cross-genre – and perhaps even more importantly, trans-generational – collaborations. Adele’s album, which has sold more than 4 million copies in just two weeks, will be in line for its share of Grammy nominations next year. Wolf Alice are also nominated for Best Rock Performance for “Moaning Lisa Smile”. He’s been nominated in this category several times, winning once (in 2007), and he’ll be going up against Dick Cavett, Janis Ian & Jean Smart, Patti Smith… and Amy Poehler.

Other Canadian nominees include Justin Bieber for best dance recording for “Where Are U Now;” Dan Snaith of Dundas, Ont., who performs as Caribou, for best dance/electronic album for “Our Love;” Cuban-Canadian singer-songwriter Alex Cuba for best Latin pop album for “Healer”. On top of that, Lamar had earned the most nominations overall with 11.
Lamar will compete in the best album category with Swift’s “1989”, The Weeknd’s “Beauty Behind the Madness”, country singer Chris Stapleton’s “Traveller” and rock band Alabama Shakes’ “Sand & Color”. Therefore, her album wasn’t eligible for the 2015 Grammy awards, and she had to be considered for the 2016 ceremony. Saxophonist Jimmy Greene, the father of one of the children killed in the Sandy Hook school shooting, earned two nominations for an album inspired by his late daughter Ana Márquez-Greene.
The 58th Grammy Awards nominations were announced Monday on CBS and showcase quite an eclectic group of nominees.
Drake is nominated for best rap performance for “Back To Back”, best rap song for “Energy” and best rap album for “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late”.
The best new artist category singles out Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett, British guitarist-singer James Bay, country singer-songwriter Sam Hunt, YouTube phenom Tori Kelly and pop singer Meghan Trainor.
Best Alternative Album: Alabama Shakes, Björk, My Morning Jacket, Tame Impala, and Wilco.
The nominees for the Best R&B Album category are Coming Home by Leon Bridges, Black Messiah by D’Angelo, Cheers To The Fall by Andra Day, Reality Show by Jazmine Sullivan, and Forever Charlie by Charlie Wilson.
