Ferguson worried Klopp will put Liverpool back on their perch

Alex Ferguson has no doubt that Liverpool will become a major threat with Jurgen Klopp at the helm. “We looked nervous at the beginning, but we said before the game the one thing we had to do was outwork Liverpool and if you outwork a team like Liverpool you have a chance of winning”.

“He’s a fantastic personality, with those big white teeth always showing”, Ferguson told reporters at a TechCrunch event in London.

The rampaging Reds have won Manchester City, Chelsea and Southampton with high margins but the absence of key players, lackadaisical display and complacency against Newcastle United saw them lost by 2-0. “We had to work and make a lot of sacrifices, but we accomplished a lot with Dortmund”. I hope they do that, but I didn’t know there were complaints about him.

The performance at Newcastle was a blip, a bad day in the middle of a run of excellent ones, so to concentrate on the exception rather than the recent rule would be a curious way of looking at things, from a Liverpool perspective.

Martin Skrtel’s reached an unwanted landmark in Liverpool’s surprise 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon, moving level with former team-mate Jamie Carragher in the list of players with the most Premier League own goals.

Midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has backed boss Steve McClaren as “the best” to get Newcastle out of a crisis.

“There is no point in sacking one of the best coaches of all time, he’s won the European Cup twice, he’s won the league in each country he’s managed in, he’s won the big trophies”.

United are stuck in flux under coach Louis van Gaal, and they are playing a style of football that supporters love to hate in England.

Lawrenson did put it in perspective by saying that Sunday had been the worst performance by Liverpool since Jurgen Klopp had arrived, although he did add that this should take nothing away from Newcastle’s display. We’ve got to try and understand why, but I won’t answer that question, because it’s not mine. “You’ve got to trust the way they’re handling it. Fine, no problem for me”. Manchester City win the league and lose it the next year.

“I just want to win, especially when we’re in this kind of situation we’re in”.

Klopp brought Simon Mignolet, Nathaniel Clyne, Christian Benteke, Roberto Firmino, James Milner and Jordon Ibe back into the side for the game at St James’ Park but they failed to make the impact expected.
