Hecking: Manchester United have to win

Manchester United will be without Wayne Rooney and Morgan Schneiderlin for their Champions League match with Wolfsburg tomorrow. But we saw at Old Trafford that we can compete against them.

United’s run of clean sheets hasn’t coincided with the same results as under Sir Alex, after all the Dutchman’s side lost to Middlesbrough 3-1 on penalties – a blemish on the streak of results.

Nick Powell, now 21, was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in the summer of 2012, along with Shinji Kagawa but after an encouraging start where he scored on his debut in a Premier League game against Wigan, he rapidly faded.

“But let us see next summer”.

“I think it’s quite different”, said the German World Cup victor, who joined Wolfsburg from Chelsea for £22 million in February.

Louis van Gaal has given his backing to Anthony Martial despite his poor goalscoring form, insisting the Manchester United striker needs time to be successful.

“At this moment, this is the most important match because it’s very important for the club to continue in the Champions League and the players want to show their qualities at the highest level”.

Since scoring four goals in his first four games following a big money move from Monaco, Martial has netted just once more, finding the net in a 1-1 Champions League draw with CSKA Moscow back in October.

The United board expected Van Gaal to lead his team through their group untroubled. It is not as if every game is 4-0 at half time, so you have to score your goals. “I know that and I have to explain it to everybody because he doesn’t need that pressure to score every match”.

Van Gaal is a big fan of Schweinsteiger as he gave him an opportunity to play in the middle at Bayern Munich.

“It’s not a law that we will miss all the chances we create”.

“The players admit they have to score”.

“I have mixed memories of Wolfsburg. You need the attitude that you want to score”.

United toiled to a 0-0 draw against West Ham on Saturday, putting them fourth in the Premier League table but meaning they have scored just seven goals in their last 10 games in all competitions.

“I can’t blame the referee (Mark Clattenburg) because he didn’t see it, it happens”.
