Grammy Awards: Kendrick leads with 11 nominations

Immediate reaction: This category played out as expected, as Swift, Lamar and The Weeknd were locks – and many critics were cautiously optimistic about Southern rockers Alabama Shakes and country crooner Chris Stapleton, easily having the best year of his life. Loosely Australian country vet Keith Urban has also earned recognition in the 2016 Grammy Awards pool, earning a nomination for Best Country Solo Performance with the wholly American-sounding John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16.

The 83 categories were announced this morning, with Kendrick leading the noms with 11 nods.

Pharrell and West are also nominated for four awards, including album of the year for producing songs on Lamar’s album.

Wale’s The Album About Nothing didn’t get nominated for a Grammy today, but he’s still making news because of his personal grievances.

While Lamar, 28, was way ahead of the pack in the number of nominations, Taylor Swift and The Weeknd tied for second with seven nominations each.

Nominees for record of the year, which honors the artist and the production team, include Swift (“Blank Space”) and the Weeknd (“Can’t Feel My Face”), as well as D’Angelo (“Really Love”), Mark Ronson with Bruno Mars (“Uptown Funk”) and Ed Sheeran (“Thinking Out Loud”).

Now he’s topped Eminem as the hip-hop artist with the most nominations in a single year. Both Bieber and Adeles new albums will qualify for Grammy nominations next year since they were released after September 30 — the final day for eligibility this year. He also received nominations for pop duo/group performance for “Bad Blood” with Taylor Swift and dance recording “Never Catch Me” with Flying Lotus.

R&B singer/songwriter The Weeknd was tapped for record (Can’t Feel My Face) and album of the year, the latter for Beauty Behind The Madness, which entered the Billboard 200 at No. 1.

Grammy-nominated rapper Kendrick Lamar has been named the Grand Marshal for this year’s Compton Christmas Parade. “Hamilton” did pick up a nomination for best musical theater album.
