Misfiring Martial must be given time, says manager Van Gaal

The three-times Champions League victor has been out of work since leaving Real Madrid in May after failing to win a major trophy at the Santiago Bernabeu last campaign, despite guiding the club to their 10th Champions League crown a season earlier.

He then said: “Of course, for every manager, they would all think of managing Manchester United”.

Van Gaal also called for less pressure to be piled on young striker Anthony Martial, who is United’s only recognised fit forward for tonight’s game, with skipper Wayne Rooney sideliend at home. “That game [against Leicester], I said also in the press conference after, we lost because the referee gave a penalty, against Rafael, I remember that very well”.

On United’s struggles, Schurrle added: “It’s surprising that they are struggling to score goals, but they have awesome players and they know where the goal is, so we’ve got to be very careful.

Win a game and it was the back page, maybe”.

Van Gaal concedes dropping into the Europa League would be a big blow for the three-time European Champions.

“But I’m convinced he should continue (in the team) and he will score at the right moment again”. I didn’t expect that. They have quality but they want to score goals.

There are a number of causes behind the club’s underwhelming goal tally, not least including Louis van Gaal’s conservative tactics.

“We just have to shake it off really quickly”, goalkeeper and captain Diego Benaglio said.

Guillermo Varela made his debut in the 0-0 draw against West Ham on Saturday but could be thrown into the starting XI on Tuesday.

The Red Devils need a win to guarantee a place in the knockout stages, with third-placed PSV just one-point behind in Group B.

The 0-0 home stalemate against PSV a fortnight ago cost them the opportunity to qualify with a match to spare and ensure this trip to Wolfsburg was a dead rubber like in 2008.

“A lot of players have missed chances today – a lot of players, and different, players”.

“That’s why we have that belief”.

“It won’t be an easy game for Manchester United”.
