Google may bring Fiber ultrafast Internet service to Chicago

Although there’s no schedule on when residents and business would be able to get service or if Google Fiber will ultimately bring its service to these two areas, the service provider said that both cities are promising candidates. Earlier this fall, Google said that Oklahoma City, Jacksonville and Tampa would be the next three cities being invited “to explore bringing Google Fiber to their communities”. Like those before it, the two cities will complete a checklist of items to prepare them for a large-scale fiber rollout and break up the massive project into more manageable pieces.

Chicago would have to agree to a long checklist of requirements, including the ability to provide permits to install the fiber along existing infrastructure and build “Google Huts”-which are key distribution points for the network”. It has not formally applied for those city approvals, though, and has set no timetable for making a decision on Portland.

Google announced today that it is planning to bring Google Fiber to two new locations. “And with the help of gigabit Internet, Chicago and L.A. can boost their creative cultures with Internet speed to match their size”, Google said in a blog post.

The high-speed Internet that Google Fiber injects – up to 1,000 megabits per second, spelling blazing fast downloads – also figures to be a hit with L.A.’s entertainment and tech scene as well.

In L.A., faster Internet may mean that indie musicians and YouTube stars can spend less time worrying about bandwidth, and more time creating their next project.

Google Fiber is now up and running in Kansas City, Austin and Provo, Utah; and Google has committed to launching its internet service in Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, Raleigh-Durham, Salt Lake City and San Antonio.
