Will ‘The Hunger Games’ movie franchise expand to prequels?

“Mockingjay Part 2” isn’t doing as well as “The Hunger Games” or “Catching Fire” at the box office, and Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns told Variety that it was because there were no arenas in the two-part finale.

The last installment of the “Hunger Games” dominated the box office in the US and Canada for a 3rd straight week, with Christmas horror flick “Krampus” within the quantity two spot.

It was only a matter of time before someone figured out a way to keep the money flowing with more movies, and now Lionsgate may have finally hit upon a solution: prequels.

According to Burns, younger fans missed the arena-centric nature of the first two films when the series shifted its focus in the two-part Mockingjay finale. No plot information has been revealed at this point, but Burns confirmed that “if we went backwards there obviously would be arenas”. Earlier in the year Lionsgate’s CEO alluded to the possibility of prequels and sequels, with Peeta himself Josh Hutcherson confirming that news through a little slip-up at San Diego Comic-Con. This opens up a possibly of prequels for the franchise. Additionally, with a rich history of Panem’s problems established in the first quartet of films, the idea of shifting the story to the circumstances that inspired the first Hunger Games competition seems like a solid scenario.

If you need more Hunger Games in your life, Lionsgate also said earlier this month that it was planning theme parks in the USA and China based around the property (although we find it hard to imagine what kind of rides those would entail).
