The duo got out of the auto and were talking with the off-duty officer about the BMW when one of them, Devon Holder, 30, pulled an air pistol, which the officer thought was a real gun, and demanded his belongings, sources said.
The officer pulled out his own gun and shot the armed man. The second man drove off in the auto and has not been arrested. He was pronounced dead at Jamaica Medical Center.
When the officer arrived, police said two men exited the BMW. Police said the off-duty officer was responding to an ad at 145th Avenue near Guy R. Brewer Boulevard for a used, white BMW.
Cops recovered the suspect’s black pt-85 blowback air pistol at the scene.
The officer handed over his wallet, which didn’t contain his badge, sources said. Asked if the robbery suspect had produced a BB gun, the NYPD spokesman, Detective Martin Speechley, said, “I don’t know”.
