Trump’s call on Monday for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States” has drawn an unusually forceful level of rebuke from across the nation and overseas.

John Kasich, the OH governor running for president, slammed Trump’s “outrageous divisiveness”, while a more measured Ted Cruz, who has always been cautious about upsetting Trump’s supporters, said, “Well, that is not my policy”.

Ryan, speaking during a news conference Tuesday, said he does not normally comment on what takes place in the presidential race, but felt it was “incumbent upon leaders”, including himself, to “stand up and defend what conservatism is” and what Republican Party principles are writ large.

In an interview on Fox News, Trump said Muslim members of the USA armed forces would “come home” and that his plan would “not apply to people living in the country”.

A spokeswoman for British Prime Minister David Cameron called Trump’s comments “divisive, unhelpful and quite simply wrong”.

“Most of the evidence of terrorism so far in our country has had something to do with immigration”. Trump remains in first place in the Republican polls.

Earnest also said GOP presidential candidates should be disqualified if they continue to say they would support Trump if he becomes the GOP presidential nominee.

“It’s embarrassing at best”, Barbour said of Trump’s impact on his party.

“The fact is what Donald Trump said yesterday disqualifies him from serving as president”, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said in Tuesday’s press briefing.
