Next-Gen Subaru WRX STI Could Be A Hybrid

The first is a standard hybrid drivetrain made up of a turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-four engine that works jointly with an electric motor and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission to spin all four wheels.

The STI’s 2.5-liter EJ turbo-four, a persistent workhorse since the 2004 Subaru WRX STI, will presumably be discontinued.

The Subaru WRX and the WRX STI are both known for being street-legal rally weapons that can out-perform quite a few cars that cost significantly more money.

The report cites an unnamed source that indicates Subaru’s famous all-wheel-drive system will switch to a new layout that employs an electric motor mounted to the rear axle.

The new model is set to launch in 2017 and the exterior of the auto will be improved with some newly designed parts, such as more aggressive-looking fenders, carbon-fiber air ducts, a rear diffuser, and a newly developed rear wing.

The Subaru Impreza is not the only one getting an upgrade.

As always, these are very much rumors and should be taken with a enormous grain of salt, but we’re beginning to see hybrids become the norm in performance cars, so this wouldn’t be a huge shock if it came to fruition.

Subaru’s SGP architecture is created to incorporate battery packs and electric motors.

According to Motoring, Subaru is also testing a plug-in hybrid version of the new STI, which could be shown at the 2018 Tokyo Motor Show.

The Subaru WRX STI has never been meant to be a vehicle for motorists who want to keep a low profile, and the global platform is not about to break the Impreza’s tradition.
