‘Hunger Games’ finale fends off spooky ‘Krampus’ flick at the box office
Box Office Mojo reports on this past weekend’s box office including the surprising (?) news that Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur fell more than 60% in its second weekend, only the second Pixar film to accomplish that dubious feat (Cars 2 was the first).

Krampus also started rolling out overseas, grossing $3.3 million, including a stellar $423,000 in Austria, home country of the holiday legend. Mockingjay Part 2 earned $18.6 million off a nasty 64%, but really on par with other post-turkey frames. There was only one new major release in “Krampus”, a darkly comic horror film from Legendary and Universal that picked up a solid $16 million. In fact, the movie did well enough to upset some of its competition this week, as family fare was unable to stand against the horror hit.
Upcoming we have Ron Howard’s In the Heart of the Sea starring Chris Hemsworth. The fourth installment in the Hunger Games franchise is the first film to pull a threepeat since Straight Outta Compton in August. “The Mockingjay 2” has held the box office title since its weekend debut in the last week of November.
In third place for a second week was boxing flick “Creed”, a next-generation version of the “Rocky” series, whose revenue totaled $15.54 million. The exact order will be determined Monday when final weekend numbers are released.
Universal domestic distribution chief Nick Carpou said the studio wasn’t intimidated by the fact that ticket sales tend to fall into a trough during this time of year.
Sony releases Spectre and The Night Before claimed fifth and sixth place with respective takes of $5.4 million and $4.9 million.
With a 47% drop from last week’s huge Thanksgiving debut, ‘Creed’ held onto the #3 spot and won $15.5 million. The Good Dinosaur, $19.4 million.4. Although not quite in the top 10 highest-grossing films of the year (worldwide) yet, it should pass Cinderella’s $542.69 million soon. Although it didn’t do quite as much business, the Weinstein Company’s ‘Macbeth’ scored $67,868 and a per-screen average of $13,574.

“Youth”, a Michael Caine starrer film, opened in four theatres with an average of $20,000 per theatre and an estimate of $80,000 earnings.
