In his address, Additional Deputy Commissioner Rajesh S called for a sense of action and collective responsibility in combating HIV/AIDS. “But we are also at the intersection of challenges, serious challenges”, he said. “This is the reaction they get, we are very grateful for the risks that they take and for putting themselves out there to end the stigma against those living with HIV”. Seniors 55 to 60 years of age and older are also becoming more affected. “The situation is getting better because people are getting more knowledge and their longevity and quality of life are improving”. “HIV is real. It affects individuals in many different ways”, he said. “There is no need to separate them as that will expose the population to the pandemic”, said Nyarko. Another risk of HIV infection is mother-to-child transmission during birth or through breastfeeding.
December 1 was World AIDS Day! The event was conducted in the Phek Town Council Conference hall. Locally, we used the occasion to recommit ourselves and organisations to the mammoth/daunting tasks we have to do to reduce new infections, reduce stigma and discrimination, put and keep people on treatment, and reduce AIDS-related deaths. Addressing the gathering, the deputy commissioner said the “zero-point” targets should be fulfilled in totality. “No one should have to live with this disease”. “Our mandate is to reduce the incidence of HIV and that is the business that we will pursue.” she said, adding it was about time that churches see their role as more than just providing a charity “to something more which is teaching dignity and respect among their congregations and, in this way, help to reduce that stigma”.
What is the meaning of World AIDS Day? “We had 10 cases of AIDS reported in October 2015 and 31 cases of HIV”, she said.
While a lot of focus for yesterday’s World AIDS yesterday was on PReP as prevention and working towards getting to zero new infections, many woke on this day of remembrance to find a letter on social media that reminded them that while we have made huge steps in the science of HIV, we still have a long way to go in how we treat it socially. There are about 36.9 million people living with HIV in the world that includes among 2.6 million children. Wearing a red ribbon is one simple way to do this.
