Hyundai Motor launches flagship luxury sedan under Genesis brand

South-Korean carmaker Hyundai has unveiled the first model of its newly established premium division, the Genesis G90. This time around, it’s Hyundai, which just revealed a teaser image of their upcoming model called the IONIQ. It’s a full-size sedan called the G90, and it will replace the Hyundai Equus when it goes on sale next year. The 3.8L GDI V-6 delivers 315 hp and can hit 0-62 miles per hour (100 km/h) in 6.9 seconds. A new design gives the G90 a fresh look, though it is not a radical change compared to its predecessor, the Hyundai Genesis.

“I believe that the flagship model of the Genesis brand, armed with the company’s state-of-the-art auto technologies and high performance, can compete equally with the world’s top luxury offerings”, Hyundai Motor Group chairman Chung Mong-koo said at the launch event, held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Seoul on Wednesday. It measures 5,205 mm long, 1,915 mm wide, 1,495 mm high, and has a wheelbase of 3,160 mm, while a rumored long wheelbase version is 5,495 mm long with a wheelbase 3,450 mm. Ride comfort and road holding is optimized by combining an advanced H-TRAC all-wheel-drive system with the first application of Genesis Adaptive Control Suspension.

Under the hood, the G90 gets a choice of three gasoline engines teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Despite its size, the trunk only has a capacity of 484 liters. A 310-hp, 3.8-liter V-6 and a 419-hp, 5.0-liter V-8 will also be offered, though we don’t know if all of these engines will reach the USA market.

Last month, Hyundai announced Genesis as a premium brand to boost earnings and burnish its reputation. Engineers have also implemented the world’s first Smart Posture Caring (SPC) system to determine the optimal position for the driver’s body to minimise stress on long journeys. G90’s VIP ergo passenger seats feature multiple ranges of electronically-controlled adjustment and are approved by German campaign for healthier backs, Aktion Gesunder Rücken.
