She then went on to become an author, publishing two books that recount her life and the role that faith played in it.

On Dec. 1, 1955, Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery, Alabama bus.

“We are honoring Miss Parks on this date for the sacrifices she made and the risks she took at speaking up during a very trying time in our history”, said Terry Bassett, executive director of the Yolo County Transportation District.

She said, “No!” in the face of the bully. She delivered the keynote address at the gathering, which was convened by the National Bar Association, the country’s largest organization of black attorneys. To make room, bus driver James Blake moved the “colored” section sign behind the row Parks was sitting in and demanded that she, and the three other black people, move to seats in the rear of the bus.

The NAACP realized it had the right person to work with, as it battled against the system of segregation in Montgomery.

Fred Gray, the lawyer who represented the women who sued to overturn the segregated bus seating ordinance, will also speak.

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton returned to Alabama for a tribute to Rosa Parks and the lawyers behind the Montgomery Bus Boycott on Tuesday.

Students from the Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School and the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy also performed at the ceremony.

Today, the center that helped inspire Parks continues its mission of fighting for social justice and is likewise inspired by Parks’ work and words.

A 37¢ stamp in the To Form A More Perfect Union set issued August 30, 2005, commemorates the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott (Scott 3937e).

Parks was arrested because segregation on buses was legal in Montgomery at the time.

The praise for Clinton from black leaders here would be hard for Sen.

“Senator Bernie Sanders has captured the imagination of this nation because he is consistent in his principles”, said Devine.

A recent NBC News/SurveyMonkey online pollfound Clinton barely edged out Sanders among white voters, and had a modest lead among Hispanics – but dominated Sanders among black voters, leading him by a 54 percentage point margin.

She spent her formative years outside Montgomery, in Pine Level, Alabama. “Let us rejoice and be glad in it”, she said – and crossed her arms to join hands with those on stage to sing Civil Rights era staple “We Shall Overcome” after her remarks. Viola White had refused to move during an incident in 1944.

“What we’re really doing brothers and sisters is helping America live up to its creed of being this great beacon of hope and justice for all the world to marvel”, said Crump. This isn’t just about strengthening ties between police and citizens, although that is very important.
