During the last enrollment period, almost half of the 4.2 million returning customers were automatically renewed. Some 2 million people so far have used new features on HealthCare.gov that allow consumers to search whether a given health plan covers their medicine or includes their doctors. “While we have more work to do, more than 1 million new consumers have signed up for affordable quality coverage in the 38 states that use HealthCare.gov. And existing Marketplace customers who have returned and shopped for a more affordable plan are paying less in premiums this year than they were paying last year”. “We’re feeling good about progress”, he said in a teleconference Wednesday. Enrollment closes on December 15 for coverage effective January 1 and on January 31 for 2016 coverage. Those that do not have insurance coverage are likely to face tax penalties from the federal government.
