The Hollywood blacklist drama “Trumbo” has a leading three Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations for best ensemble, best actor for Bryan Cranston, and best supporting female for Helen Mirren. But while the predominantly black casts of both “Beasts” and “Straight Outta Compton” were recognized for their ensemble work, alongside “Trumbo”, “Spotlight” and “The Big Short”, individual acting nominations in most film categories exhibited a striking lack of diversity.
Other British nominations for the American awards including Eddie Redmayne who has been given a Best Actor nod for the Forthcoming The Danish Girl.
The best actress nominees were Cate Blanchett for the lesbian drama “Carol”, Brie Larson for psychological thriller “Room”, Saoirse Ronan for Irish immigrant tale “Brooklyn” and Sarah Silverman for “I Smile Back”.
In the supporting actress category she is nominated alongside Kate Winslet for her role as Joanna Hoffman in Steve Jobs, Rooney Mara for Carol, Rachel McAdams for Spotlight and Alicia Vikander for The Danish Girl.
Bridge of Spies’ Mark Rylance, who also nabbed a supporting TV actor nod for Wolf Hall, is the supporting movie actor slate with Christian Bale (The Big Short), Michael Shannon (99 Homes), Jacob Tremblay (Room) and Idris Elba (Beasts of Nation), whose starring role in Luthor snagged him a second SAG nod for male actor in a TV movie/miniseries.
LGBT-centric TV shows and movies were also honored in several categories. Mirren was also nominated for a supporting performance for “Trumbo”. Anna Faris and Anthony Mackie will announce the nominees on Wednesday morning in Los Angeles. Members of the SAG Awards nominating committee were invited to screenings of the latter, though.
The most important thing to know about the television nominees for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards is that against all odds, voters managed to retain a place for Maggie Smith in the outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series field, no matter how limited her Downton Abbey screentime may be.
Universal Pictures was the big studio victor today, with six nods, three ahead of any other studio on the list.
