New York attorney general probes Springsteen ticket listings

New York Attorney General Eric Schniederman has an issue with Bruce Springsteen tickets appearing on secondary sites ahead of Friday’s on-sale and on Monday issued letters to StubHub, TicketNetwork and Vivid Seats asking for clarification about if the tickets listed truly do exist.

Schneiderman’s office sent letters expressing concern to three leading online sites that offer tickets on the secondary market.

As previously reported, Springsteen has booked a tour marking the release of The Ties That Bind, a box set looking back on his 1980 LP The River, with dates scheduled to run from mid-January through mid-March.

ABC News reports TicketNetwork has taken down listings for Springsteen tickets until Friday’s on-sale.

Speculative tickets are sold by re-sellers who do not have tickets in hand.

We are reviewing the Attorney General’s letter and will respond to it. We stand behind every ticket that is sold on our site, promising our customers that: they will get their tickets in time for the event; the tickets will be valid for entry and the tickets will be the same as those that were ordered.

The idea behind these potentially “speculative tickets,” The Guardian writes, is for the sellers to secure a buyer at their agreed-upon, typically inflated price, then buy the tickets retail and pocket the profit.

With its giant entertainment industry, NY has among the toughest resale rules, which include a ban on venues accepting only paperless tickets, a measure aimed at giving consumers more control.

The letter from the Attorney General’s Office also lists Springsteen tickets priced at thousands of dollars for shows at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, Albany’s Times Union Center and Buffalo’s First Niagara Center.

“In many cases, consumers who purchase a speculative ticket do not receive the seats that were advertised and paid for”, he said. Ticket speculation also drives up prices and can cause widespread confusion and frustration among consumers.
