SAG nominations that were most likely unexpected for many include Sarah Silverman receiving a nomination for best actress for the film “I Smile Back” and Michael Shannon receiving a best supporting actor nomination for the movie “99 Homes”. Besides its nod for ensemble, the film got a supporting actress nod for Rachel McAdams.
The drama about the Hollywood blacklistTrumbo and the television series House of Cards with three nominations each, are leading the list of nominees for the twenty-second edition of the Screen Actors Guild Awards or better known as the SAG Awards.
Quentin Tarantino’s Western drama The Hateful Eight also came away empty-handed.
The nominations for the 2016 SAG Awards were announced on Wednesday. Mirren was also nominated in the lead actress category for her role in Woman in Gold.
Elsewhere in film, SAG saw fit to fill its Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading (film) Role category with naught but portrayals of real-life guys, including Johnny Depp as Whitey Bulger in Black Mass, Michael Fassbender’s take on Steve Jobs, and Cranston as the aforementioned old coot. His co-star Helen Mirren is up for best supporting actress for her role as Hedda Hopper.
The same could be said of the all-too-familiar slates of nominees in the comedy and drama series categories.
Kidman’s nomination proved bad films, if aired first on TV, can still nab award nominations.
The SAG nominations yesterday were announced 24 hours before the Golden Globe nominees are set to be revealed, by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). Many were offended when all the 2015 Oscars acting nominees were white.
On the comedy front, the female nominees for their work in a television series included Uzo Aduba (“Orange Is the New Black”), Edie Falco (“Nurse Jackie”) – who picked up her record-setting 22nd nod – Ellie Kemper (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”), 17-time nominee Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) and Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation”). The full list of nominees follows.
Then Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs, have two nominations each.
Cast: “Beasts of No Nation”, “The Big Short”, “Spotlight”, “Straight Outta Compton”, “Trumbo”.
In TV, Jon Hamm was nominated for outstanding male actor in a drama alongside Peter Dinklage, Kevin Spacey, Bob Odenkirk and relative newcomer Rami Malek (Mr. Robot).
British period drama Downton Abbey was also nominated for best drama ensemble. On the television side, nods went to the stunt ensembles working on “The Blacklist“, “Game of Thrones”, “Homeland”, ” Marvel’s Daredevil” and “The Walking Dead“.
On the small screen, the casts of “The Big Bang Theory”, “Key & Peele”, “Modern Family”, “Orange Is the New Black”, “Transparent” and “Veep” are nominated for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series.

HBO’s Game Of Thrones, which has dominated the drama series stunt category, winning it every year, has a chance to continue its momentum from the Emmys where it rode a tidal wave to a record-breaking 12 wins, including best drama series.
