Yahoo’s Flickr VR App Dives into Gear VR Experiences

It allows users to upload 360-degree photos, but with the latest VR app, the immersive experience has enhanced. Open the app and you’ll be greeted with a carousel of the top look-in-every-direction shots from all across Flickr, and tapping into any of them will instantly throw you into that scene.

According to the announcement, the new Flickr app for the Samsung Gear VR headset can now be downloaded from the Oculus Store.

Among the cool 360-degree offerings on Flickr are views of the Aurora Borealis in Finland to Horseshoe Bend of the Colorado River in Arizona. For now, though, this is strictly a Gear VR service. Currently, the Flickr VR app is only compatible with Samsung smartphones. The good news is that although Yahoo hasn’t mentioned anything definitive, it seems that they at least have plans to introduce something for other VR headset types.

With Flickr’s new app on the Samsung Gear VR, users will get a chance to immerse them into a full 360 degree experience of the most popular Flickr photos.

The headset is light, comfortable, and affordable – likely because it requires a mobile device to work.

Being its applicability with Samsung handset alone, it has to be ensured that the handset is compatible with the Gear VR and those being Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note5. The official Flickr VR app sources numerous group’s photos, mostly because any non-equirectangular images (360×180 with a 2:1 width/height proportion) are removed automatically.

Yahoo has not yet stated anything definitive about the VR headset. The site has launched a virtual reality Flickr app, called Flickr VR.
